John Comino - President

John is the longest serving board member of the current board having served as both President, Vice President and Treasurer. John was Mayor of Woollahra Council (the first Greek in this position) and a very experienced lawyer who specializes in property law through his own practice (Comino Prassas Solicitors).

John’s expertise in property law and contacts in local government have assisted with the several development applications submitted with Council and all legal issues.

Bill kritharas circle

Bill Kritharas - Vice President

Bill is a Partner with Sparke Helmore Lawyers, a national law firm.  Bill is a litigator and has been practising law for over 15 years with a focus in workplace, health & safety and construction law. Bill's clients include both private sector, particularly in the construction, agriculture and transport industries and public sector clients across Commonwealth, State and Local Governments.

Bill is also a former Deputy Mayor of Canterbury City Council, having served on the Council for almost 9 years.  He was first elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008 and was instrumental in setting up the Canterbury Legal Centre to provide legal aid services. Bill also set up the Arts Committee, the Sports Committee and Mental Health Awareness Week and was instrumental in setting up the Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel to improve the development application process.

Bill is also the Chair of the Sydney Multicultural Arts Centre based at Belmore Sports Ground and continues to work closely with the local community.

Bill has also served a number of organisations in the Hellenic Community, including as the Australian youth coordinator of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad from 2001 to 2003.

Bill was elected to the Board in December 2013

Graham Athanaseris - Vice President

Graham is the founder and managing director of the Polyseal Group and has overseen its continued success for more than a quarter of a century.

Polyseal Group has evolved to become a dependable and preferred contractor to an ever increasing list of Australia’s top tier construction companies with particular focus on coatings and applications, building services and remedial projects.

Polyseal Group’s national footprint and premium quality offering has facilitated considerable depth of experience across property development industry sectors, including residential, retail, industrial, marine and civil.

Since establishing the Polyseal Group in 1989, its total employee base has grown to more than 100 across its businesses, Australia-wide.

Graham is very active in the community, particularly his work in Greek-Australian organisations, football and the sport’s well-known Sydney Olympic Football Club (SOFC).

Serving for more than a decade in roles at SOFC, including president and vice-president, Graham has been actively involved in plans to transform the club into a dynamic sporting enterprise focused on talent development as well as community relations and engagement.

As a director of the Greek community’s iconic Hellenic Club in Sydney’s CBD since 2010, Graham has harnessed his building industry experience to assist with the maintenance of the venue’s key assets. He has also made valuable contribution in roles within various other Greek-Australian organisations.

Graham prides himself on a family-orientated approach which extends to both business and his community work, where he enjoys numerous longstanding friendships.

George Katsaros - Treasurer

George has served as President of the Club from 1999 - 2002.  George currently holds the position of Treasurer on the current Board.  He is presently employed as an Accountant with Kamper & Associates and brings to the Club not only his dedication and experience as a previous President and Director but can provide sound accounting and financial advice as well.

John Kikilas

John Kikilas has a background in insurance and the financial sector. He is a Senior Account Manager with Arthur J Gallagher Insurance Brokers, the world’s fourth largest risk and insurance broker advisors.

John has been a Past President of the Kalavryton Society (NSW) Aghia Lavra Inc and also a Past President of Campsie Rotary Club.

John has committed to assisting in all areas of his experience in the membership drive, Business Networking and develop use of Club facilities for business, professional, cultural and social purposes as well as the establishment of a cultural and youth sub-committee to develop programmes for Greek language and dance.

Greg Gav

Greg is a businessman and owner of a number of buildings in the CBD. The Greg has built many residential and commercial projects for development in City and also the surrounding suburbs. Greg's experience in property development and contacts have helped with the rental, financing and all property issues. Greg has also generously donated his time and the services of his staff for project management of the Castlereagh Street building.

Nikolas hatzistergos circle

Nikolas Theofilos Hatzistergos

Nikolas is the Managing Director of William Buck, Chartered Accountants in NSW and is the Chairman of William Buck International Limited.

He is also Chairman of Mazars Australia; a Director and Chairman of the Board Audit Committee for Bank of Sydney; A Director of St Basils Homes, and a Member of the Governing Council of Paxity (AISBL), the 8th largest international accounting association.

He is also a Director and Chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee for South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club Limited (the Rabbitohs).

Nikolas also frequently presents papers on accounting and business management issues for a number of professional bodies, and has authored a number of papers that have been published both in Australia and overseas. He is also regularly interviewed by the press for his insights on accounting and business related issues.

Nikolas was elected to the Board on 16th November, 2014.

Nicholas pappas circle

Nicholas George Pappas AM

Nicholas joined the Board in 2014. He is a practising solicitor of 30 years standing with an emphasis on commercial litigation.  He serves on a number of public and private boards in a variety of contexts.  Among these, he is Chairman of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Bank of Sydney Limited, and Secretary and Trustee of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Consolidated Trust. He served as President of the Board of Trustees of the Powerhouse Museum between 2003-2010. 

In addition to his legal qualifications, Nicholas holds a PhD in Economic History from the University of Sydney. 

He was appointed a Member of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2013.

Maria Sallos

Maria is the only woman on the Board and a former president of the Hellenic Lyceum. Maria has represented the Hellenic Lyceum  Sydney both here and in Greece and brings a significant degree of knowledge, skills and contacts with members and community at large. Maria is also one the Vice Presidents of the Red Cross - Red Ribbon Committee and an executive member of the Ladies Auxiliary Committee of the St George Greek Orthodox Church of Rose Bau. Maria is a very valuable member of the board.

The Hellenic Club honours Greek-Australian NRL greats

Hosted at the Club's newly-established Beta Bar & Gallery, above the acclaimed Alpha Restaurant, the Club celebrated the achievements of NRL leaders Nick Politis AM, Chairman of the Sydney Roosters, Dr George Peponis OAM, former Australian captain and Chairman of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, and Nick Pappas AM, Chairman of the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Respected former player and NRL identity, Phil Gould AM chatted with the guests of honour about their successes in the NRL, while guests dined on a menu prepared by Alpha’s renowned Executive Chef, Peter Conistis, and a selection of Greek wines.

Net proceeds from all ticket sales were donated to The Hellenic Initiative, a global not-for-profit organisation that works to assist Greece through crisis relief, entrepeneurship and economic development.

The Hellenic Club hosts Presidential Guards

The Hellenic Club Sydney is honoured once again to announce the impending visit of the elite Presidential Guard of Greece. The contingency of nine Evzones and two officers has been released by special permission of the President of Greece, and will visit the city of Adelaide from 19th April to 23rd April and Sydney from 23rd April to 3rd May. The Evzones will take part in official ANZAC Day ceremonies, commemorate the history of the ANZACs, and their involvement in the Battle of Crete and Greek Campaign, when Australian and Greek soldiers fought side by side for our shared values of freedom and democracy.

Traditional Pascha Feast at Alpha

Alpha's private dining experience is now available at Beta, on level one. 

For lunches only, Beta bar can accommodate 20-40 people, while bookings of 40-60 can be hosted in the spectacular gallery. 

Guests will dine on Alpha's $85pp or $95pp private dining menus, created by Executive Chef Peter Conistis. 

Beverage packages and beverages on consumption can be arranged. 

Bookings are available from 12pm, and tables will need to be vacated by 4pm.

Beta Launches On Level One Above Alpha

Beta, a bar and gallery, will boast a menu of authentic Greek dishes with an added dash of Peter Conistis' signature flair, while the drinks menu will feature inventive Greek twists on classic cocktails.

Drawing on the elegant Victorian architecture of 238 Castlereagh Street, the bar will create a modern installation within the classic space with raw and natural interiors complemented with contemporary furniture and design.

Evzones Presidential Guard Visit Highlights

Visiting Australia from April 16 to April 27, the Evzones commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete with appearances at key memorials and landmarks across Sydney. 

Commencing with a visit to ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park on the 16th, the Evzones participated in a wreath laying ceremony at Martin Place Cenotaph in the presence of the Governor of New South Wales and representatives from the Australian armed forces and Greek community organisations. 

On April 17, they visited the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Redfern followed by a demonstration at St Basil's Homes in Lakemba on April 18. A visit to the Estia Foundation in Gladesville on April 19 was proceeded by an open forum discussion in Greek on current challenges for Greece in South East Europe alongside Hellenic Club members at the Hellenic Club Sydney. On April 24 the Evzones visited All Saints Belmore church. 

The guards participated in the ANZAC Day march with the Greek RSL Sub-Branch, including a wreath laying ceremony at Martin Place Cenotaph. 

Sydneysiders were also able to observe the Evzones perfmorming a changing of the guard ceremony from April 20-22. 

On their final day in Sydney, the Evzones delighted local school children with their attendance at Sans Souci, Bexley and Earlwood public schools.
